RE: Power center upgrade

What do you have that you are replacing? I think the "Best Converter" replacement is a WFCO kit. The PD9245 is physically larger than PD9260 so many go with the the 60 as it fits the Magnetec panel better.
IMO the 45 WFCO might be a better fit and the PD60 is probably more power than you need. If I was spending money however I would get the Xantrex XADC40 for one or two batteries and the XADC60 for up to four batteries.
The WFCO is good and my 55 amp unit works great with four batteries. Don't oversize a WFCO, 45 amp is plenty. There are some posts about 55 to 75 amp WFCOs not going to boost mode when charging only one or two batteries. Although length of the charge wire comes into play and a TC should have a relatively short connection to the battery and not present any trouble.

RE: Leave in Gear at Stops -or Neutral

If it seems worthwhile to put in neutral I would shut off the motor.

RE: why would my chassis battery go dead?

I think the repair was inadaquate or incomplete. Keep the battery charger on to get you home and have them actually fix it this time. The converter needs to apply about 13 volts on the battery terminals or the battery will die. Check it with a multimeter before you roll out of the service bay.

RE: Battery charging for full-timer?

If you have utility power you do not need a battery until you move. If the battery is pretty shot just take the negative cable off and enjoy the summer.

RE: Can someone explain this "Inverter/Converter"?

How about post the make and model of the thing to get exact info on what it will or will not do for you.

RE: Tow with a "patched" tire?

I have had been running two patches (not plugs) in one tire and one patch in another for 5/10,000 miles. I expect the repair to last the rest of the tread life about 20,000 miles.

RE: Merging traffic

My cruise is usually at 55 mph and I let them work it out. Trailer or not people still aim for my door handle rather than the 300 yards or open space in front of or to the rear of me. :R

What is the NEMA number of the connector? NEMA 14-50R is what you need, what do you have?
oops, corrected the number.

RE: Outer Wheel Bearings

One of mine was too tight from the factory and failed a visual inspection when I did mine at two years. Sounds like bearings are put together with the same quality as most everything else. Full replacement done correctly should last many miles.

RE: Cat 12v batteries - any good?

I would assume those are starting batteries and may not last long when deep cycled. If they are free and you will not end up at the chiropractor for lifting them then give it a whirl. I would suggest an equilization charge of 16 volts for a few hours after they are charged.

RE: Outer Wheel Bearings

Two years old? Who did the first year repack? Were the bearings discolored from heat? Was any of the bearing surface flaking off? New bearing deserves a new race.

RE: Leaving 5er connected to house power with no load

Bubbling battery is probably either weak or has a shorted cell.
Time for at least one battery.
Check the float voltage and post the make/model of the converter for better info.

What converter or inverter/charger make and model is actually doing the charging?
Have you checked the water in the battery lately?
How many batteries do you have?

RE: 30 amp but need 50 amp

You could replace your air units with 13.5 high efficency models that pull about 11 amps each. You could run the microwave off an inverter and let a small 20/30 amp converter take care of the battery. These changes would require adjusting the energy management system.

RE: Alkaline 1.5 volt - Metal Hydride 1.25 volt..... why?

Just now I peeled open a brand new Duracell alkaline 9 volt battery.
Definately found six individual cells connected in series. The cells are long tubes standing the full length of the battery. Three wide and two deep.
Many years ago when I opened a nine volt alkaline the six cells were more like buttons stacked on top of each other.

RE: Alkaline 1.5 volt - Metal Hydride 1.25 volt..... why?

It sure is strange that a AA battery when changed to MiHD chemistry lowered the voltage by 3 tenth of a volt, but when a 9 volt was changed over, the voltage stayed the same as the alkaline.
When the 9 volt goes dead open it up. I bet the 9 volt NiMh has 7 or 8 cells compared to 6 for the alkaline. Please let us know.
